Drawing

Kate Jacob’s drawing are a complete absorption of attention and energy. A constant shift between two poles, internal and external, looking and seeing, back and forth, between and around.

Working both on loose paper and in sketchbooks, patterns, colours, marks, lines, repeat from page to page; visual stories are hashed out, threads of ideas followed until they exhaust themselves. The sketchbooks travel between home and studio, bridging the gap between them. Using a variety of media and working small scale, drawing is also a way to prepare for the start of a studio day, to focus the self into that space. Sometimes the ideas and patterns of thought end up in paintings, but more recently they stand alone.

“I can draw anywhere I have a surface and something to make a mark with. It demands nothing but a desire to look and imagine. I learned to draw before paint and looking back everything I paint I’ve learnt from the practice of drawing. The practice and discipline of spending time looking and seeing into things. “
